The village of La Saunerie
is near the town of Champdeniers in the Poitou Charente region of
Western France, about an hour inland from La Rochelle.
The gîte is in a small hamlet of about 10 dwellings. Champdeniers - the nearest town for shopping - is about 3 miles away. Champdeniers has a very good supermarket selling fresh meat and fish, goats cheeses, fruit and vegetables, as well as clothes, espadrilles, kitchenware etc. There is a bank in Champdeniers where you can change money.Niort - ten miles south of Champdeniers - has an extensive market on Thursday as well as Saturday mornings. The market hall in Niort is open every morning except Sunday. |

| There are three lakes nearby - nearest 3 miles
- for swimming, fishing or boating. All the lakes have sandy beaches
and activities for young children. There are swimming pools in
Secondigny, Niort and Parthenay. There is also an excellent golf
course only 2 miles away. Bird watchers are well catered for in the
vicinity and there are marked tracks for cycling and
walking. Numerous chateaux that are well worth a visit can be found nearby, several within a 5 mile radius. The Marais - a drained marshland park - is only half an hour away. Called locally "La Venise Verte" (Green Venice) the area is criss-crossed with peaceful little canals, lovely and cool in the hottest summers. Here you can cycle on the towpaths or hire a flat-bottomed boat and paddle your way - or be paddled - around some real tranquility. |
Poiters has the Futuroscope- a theme
park emphasizing future technology. The town itself is a delightful
centre for shopping and sightseeing. Bordeaux and its vinyards and
the town of Cognac are not far away.
La Rochelle is a beautiful old port with wonderful seafood restaurants and marvellous street entertainment during the summer. Other resorts are just over an hour away - offering some excellent beaches, surfing, rock pooling etc. The islands, accessible by huge bridges, are also well worth a day out.
